Cookies and local storage
The short version
- There is exactly one cookie. It keeps you signed in, and without it the app cannot work at all.
- There is one item in local storage, which caches recent explanations so a repeated word appears instantly. You can clear it yourself.
- There are no advertising cookies, no analytics cookies, no social plug-ins, and no third-party embeds of any kind.
- Because nothing optional is stored, you are not asked to accept a cookie banner. There is nothing to consent to.
What is actually stored
| Name | What it is | What it is for | How long |
|---|---|---|---|
| site-session | A cookie, set when you sign in with Google | Tells the server which account is making a request. It is the only way the app knows who you are; without it you would be signed out on every page. | 90 days, or until you sign out |
| word-app-client-cache | An item in your browser's local storage, not a cookie | Keeps the most recent explanations on your own device, so a word your child looks up again is instant and costs nothing to generate. It never leaves your browser. | Until you clear it, or your browser does |
Both are set for this site only. Neither is used to follow you to other websites, and neither is shared with anyone.
Why there is no consent banner
European rules require consent before storing anything on your device that is not strictly necessary for the service you asked for. The session cookie is strictly necessary: without it, signing in is impossible. The explanation cache is there because you asked for the service and it only makes that service faster, and it never leaves your device.
Everything else has been removed. There are no advertising or analytics cookies, so there is nothing for a banner to ask permission for.
How to remove them
- The explanation cache: open the Parent Zone and use "Clear cache".
- The session cookie: sign out of the app, or clear cookies for this site in your browser settings. Either way you will need to sign in again to use Wordaya.
- Blocking everything: your browser can refuse cookies and local storage for this site. Signing in will then not work, but the privacy policy, terms and this page remain readable.
If that ever changes
If a reason to add analytics appears, it will not be added quietly. Anything non-essential would be switched off until you actively agreed to it, it would be described here first, and it would never be aimed at your child. The app currently contains the code for Google Analytics, and it is switched off: it loads nothing, and sets no cookies.
